Alvina Yepa, known for her skilled and intricate sgraffito (etch) work and melon style pieces, created this impressive jar in the same vein. The piece showcases a wide lower portion leading up to a narrower, flared rim, which is left unetched but is polished to a high shine. Below the rim, on a flattened portion of the piece just above the inflection, feather patterns are etched in a circle, leading down toward the body of the piece, which showcases both the recognizable melon style and is etched along panels between the melon portions with geometric designs, including steps, as well as corn stalks at the center. The contrast between the buff below the etching and the polished red along the majority of the piece is both flawless and beautiful, and Alvina is truly one of the best out of Jemez. 8 1/2″ tall x 7 1/2″ wide.
