Description
Delicately, expertly carved and vibrantly painted, this lovely kachina by Hopi/Laguna carver Ray Jose. The piece features a butterfly maiden sitting on a cloud, entirely carved of cottonwood root. The cloud is lifted high into the air, sitting atop a carved piece depicting a longhair kachina, painted with a turquoise face and black eyes, while the butterfly is painted in black, yellow, red, green, blue, and turquoise. The head of the butterfly is yellow and black, surrounded by a large tableta featuring a painted yellow and black butterfly and carved step and feather designs. Both of the maiden’s hands are outstretched, one with a clenched fist and the other, an outstretched palm. 10″ tall x 2 1/8″ wide.
